What does the word “Benchmark” mean to you?

How do your people size up?

The word “Benchmark” has been used very extensively in business for the past few decades.  One organization measures its practices, defines the quantitative values for performance and uses that data to evaluate itself against internal and external efforts of similar production.

These benchmarks have traditionally focused on production and manufacturing activities but are equally important in all aspects of a business.

It is some what easy to measure the length of a pipe or piece of steel that comes out of a process and determine the rate of performance and perfection/quality.  More challenging is measuring the people that are part of the process that produces the end product.

If the end product is of high quality and meets with the specification does that ensure or define that the people in the process are of the same quality and specification to do their job?

Many times when discussing this with business leaders, they know the end product result and what the people are supposed to do but not necessarily to what degree they fit or measure up to the specification to do the work.  This is not a criticism but more related to the fact that the leaders have not established “Benchmarks” as it relates to the people aspects of the companies deliverable.

To assist in this effort, JKL Associates has in conjunction with our strategic partner TTI Performance systems a patented job modeling/benchmarking system to assist our clients in the definition of key accountabilities and the elements that the role demands for superior performance.

It is no longer a guessing game or a transition of how it was done in the past.  This fresh analysis of job demands that remove bias allows for critical understanding of what it takes to be successful in a job role.

This week, take a look at your business and determine which jobs need to be benchmarked.  Give JKL Associates a call to help you in the process.
