Labor Day – A time to reflect
This coming weekend is the national holiday of “Labor Day.” You might ask yourself what is really behind the national day of celebration. First of all, it is far more than time off and barbecue.
Initially the concept began back in 1882 and was deemed a national holiday in 1894. That is 77 years before Memorial Day was made a national holiday in 1971.
Labor day is a time to reflect on the fruits of our labors in the United States. What the men, women and children of this multi-cultural nation has done and will continue to do. This nation which was founded on a constitution forming a republic. Giving to its citizens certain rights and protecting them by constitutional laws. This sets up a work system by which its citizens are provided opportunities to use their skills to labor and move this nation forward. This nation, under God, has been and will continue to excel in the development of labor skills by which we can lead not only on industrial and technical fronts but equally on humanistic and social fronts as well.
This weekend, as you take time to gather with family, friends, colleagues and community, take a moment to stop and give thanks for the fruits of labor in this country. Pray that we do not take this great strength for granted moving forward into our future. For it is through the hands of labor that this country has been built and will continue to build.
