Running your business and your life is a very simple process. We learned how to do it in elementary school. It is just like adding 2 + 2 and arriving at the answer of 4. We have all done that same equation hundreds of times.
Unfortunately over the years we have allowed complexity to enter the simple world of fundamentals. We have enabled crazy concepts to take precedence over simple straight forward execution.
Technology has both been part of the problem and part of the solution. All of us rely very heavily on PCs, the internet, mobile phones and the like. These tools that add ones and zeros to complete complex algorithms should enable us humans to direct our energy on the use and application of the data for progress.
We tend to take this basic data and translate it into something far more grand to make simple acts of work much more complex. Maybe it is because we have the computer to do the behind the scenes number crunching or maybe by spinning the data it makes our actual work duties appear more challenging to justify our existence.
This week, take a few minutes to walk around your business or analyze your personal habits. Are you doing things that are actually very simple but over time have become more complex? Is there an opportunity to return to simply executing the fundamentals to accomplish the job at hand?
There is a reference to football that talks about the fundamentals of blocking and tackling. If your team cant get them right consistently, planning the trick play is not worth the time you put into it.
Are you or your business team running a bunch of trick plays and not doing the fundamentals?
