4G or 2G
Last week we spoke about Feedback Culture. This week we carry on in that same general theme of communication and what level of communication is your business operating at?
We have all heard or seen the commercials from the various mobile phone service providers regarding the quality of their signal. Some have made a joke about some people getting the information sooner than the person next to them because they dont have a 4G phone signal.
I started to think about various communication transactions and saw that even without the use of cell phones, the breakdown or lack of communication in business is growing at an strong rate.
Why might this be happening?
A few thoughts come to mind.
There are different styles of communicating. From behavioral differences such as very direct to relaxed and casual. To technical differences such as email, texting and voicemail vs. face to face conversations. We also cant forget the generational differences between the language of the boomers to the X and Y generations.
Regardless of the differences, communication is critical in that without two way dialogue and agreement to understanding there is a loss in translation. We all know the saying about the word assume. In communication that one item can be the difference between productive conversation and a disaster in the making.
This week as you communicate with your fellow employees and colleagues, take a few extra seconds to plan your communication and then validate the receiving party not only heard you but understands what was conveyed. It might take a few more seconds on the front end of the conversation but will save hours of back tracking on the back end of the results or lack of results.
