Ready, Set, 2013

For the past few weeks, we have been focused on closing out 2012 and getting ready for 2013.  Each year there is this energy that is present to bring goals to completion and set up new objectives to be pursued in the coming year. We are now ready, have been set and the ball has dropped to welcome in 2013.

What does 2013 hold for your business? Will this be the breakout year as the economy grows?  Will the markets offer up strategies to position your business in a better light for your customers and clients?

With the elections of 2012 behind and the unknown results of the “Fiscal Cliff” still blowing in the wind tunnel of the nation’s capital, the story is yet to be written and plans  made last year will most likely need adjustment moving forward.

It is like the long distance runner in a race.  They work out vigorously for months leading up to the race.  Their body and mind is fully prepared. They are ready, set and when the gun sounds they jump from their standing position and begin the process of navigating the other runners in the pack. They need to call upon their training and expertise to make solid choices.  When do they push ahead and when do they run with the pack.

Your business in 2013 will be another long distance race.  Sprinting the first quarter could make you vulnerable in the following quarters.  Getting off to a slow start might leave you too much ground to make up.

As you have your kick off meetings and reiterate the company goals and objectives make sure you help your team understand the race the business is running.  Each member has his or her part to contribute.  Each individual goal accomplished contributes to the overall goals.  Each individual goal missed adds burden to the rest of the team to make up.

Consider creating an announcing staff in your head much like on TV or radio.  Have that broadcast team keep the distances and timing objective vivid in your mind as you roll forward in 2013.  When the metrics start to get out of alignment, take action to correct them.  Don’t wait for something else to cause a change but be the change agent to initiate the correction.
