Summer break is now over

Work can resume

This weekend is Labor Day. It is associated with many endings and beginnings.  For many children it is the end of summer vacation and the start of a new school year. For many employees it also means the end of the summer holidays and the getting back to the remainder of the calendar year efforts. For still others it is the official start of fall.

How ever you look at Labor Day, you should keep in mind the reason behind the holiday – Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.  The legislation passed on June 28, 1894 to make it an official national holiday.

As business leaders we are faced with many employee challenges through out the year. From hiring shortages of good quality people to celebrations of employees being recognized for both financial or social achievements. From layoffs and terminations to expanding the business and adding more jobs to the payroll. The employee/worker relationship is always an interesting landscape.

This Monday when we wake to engage the day, there is one thing we all share in common – both leaders, business owners, employees and staff – we currently have the privilege of a free nation under God and a republic that gives us the opportunity to pursue happiness.

If we forget this or take this for granted then we will risk that our “Labor Day” to celebrate the success of the American worker could become just another day of work.
